Our Afghan friend Ishaq* was beaten because the government did not like his truth-telling journalism. His son watched it all happen and later died in the hospital, possibly because of the trauma he experienced. Ishaq's daughter came home absolutely petrified because her school was bombed by those who hated the fact that girls were studying. Many of her friends died. Around 500 students were killed. It was too much. Ishaq decided to secretly take his family across the dangerous border into Pakistan.
Caring followers of Jesus welcomed Ishaq’s family into a safe house and provided food. The days stretched into weeks, then months, then two long years. Finally, Ishaq was allowed to move his family to America. Members of our team welcomed them, brought fruit and flowers, and soon became close friends. We often visited, helping them in their transition where we could.
One day Ishaq said, "I think God sent you to help me deal with my bitterness." He told his story, sharing some of the pain he had experienced. We shared with him the story of Jesus' pain and betrayal. We told how He forgave those who hurt him. We prayed with Ishaq for God to take away the bitterness. God is healing his heart.
Now Ishaq also shares God’s love with others who have recently arrived, helping them adjust and find their way.
Ishaq represents the rough reality that 1 in 70 people in the world have fled their schools, jobs, and homes. Numbers represent real people who need love.
As part of their human family, what should we do?
Together let’s be a Home for All Nations
